Suffolk Men’s Super League champions Leiston travelled to Event City in Manchester as the county representatives in the 2016 BDO Champions Cup.
All BICC counties send their Super League champions to the prestigious event, which is played in a group format, with the eight group winners progressing to the quarter-final knockout stages. All matches were Best of 9 sets, with nine players required per team.
Leiston found themselves in a tough group with the Essex champions and competition favourites Southend, as well as the representative teams from Gwynedd, Northamptonshire and Cumbria.
The opening game proved to be all important for the Leiston lads, as they went down to 7-2 to the powerful Southend team – as despite winning 6-3 vs Northants, and 7-2 against both Cumbria and Gwynedd, it was the team from our neighbours Essex who went through to the Knockout stages.
Southend went on to win the Champions Cup, beating Yorkshire’s Castle WMC 5-4 in the final.
The Leiston players on the day (as pictured above) were: Back row (left to right): Carl Brennan, Lee Newson (capt), Dave Ballard-Flatt, Dean Barker, Steph Brown, Liam Last, Andy Noy. Front Row (left to right): Ryan Meikle, Arron Fairweather, Andy Meikle.
