Surrey 23-13 Suffolk

Suffolk suffered a disappointing 23-13 overall defeat away to Surrey in the British Inter Counties Championship Division Two at Worcester Park RBL Club.

Lady of the Match Barbara Chenery (Stowmarket – 15.79 ave) hit a 180 as she got Suffolk off to a perfect start in the opening game of the Women’s B match by winning 3-2 – but this was to be the last time Suffolk would be ahead overall of the weekend.

After unfortunate 3-2 defeats for Beckie Edmeades (Lowestoft – 13.78 ave) and Sami Watson (Bury – 16.41 ave) put Surrey ahead, the home side then went on to clinch a 5-1 victory in the Women’s B match with defeats for Wendy Harden (Lowestoft – 12.76 ave), Carly Chenery (Stowmarket – 14.27 ave) and Leesa Woollard (Stowmarket  15.49 ave).

Already well behind in the overall match, it was important that Suffolk Men’s B made a good start in their match – and they soon overturned the four game deficit by racing into a 5-1 lead.

Despite a defeat for Stuart Greenhalgh (Trimley – 25.76 ave & 180), there were wins for Steve Hayward (Haverhill – 21.29 ave), Kim Buckingham (Lake Lothing – 23.08 ave), Richard Watson (Haverhill – 26.34 ave) and Kevin Harris (Clapgate Lane – 23.86 ave) and Tony Lincoln (Lake Lothing – 27.31 ave) as Suffolk got back in contention in the overall match.

After Duane Nessling (Saxmundham – 20.56 ave) was beaten, Man of the Match Liam Last (Leiston – 27.33 ave) put Suffolk Men’s B 6-2 ahead – but losses for Craig Woodward (Smock – 18.70 ave) and Andy Meikle (Leiston – 20.39 ave) kept Surrey close.

Wins in the final two games from the Sudbury pair of Jason Stalker (22.03 ave) and John Attwater (20.22 ave) saw Suffolk Men’s B to a fine 8-4 victory, and even more importantly brought the overnight score in the overall match level at 9-9.

A tough task awaited Suffolk Women’s A team on Sunday against a Surrey team rated as one of the best in whole country, having previously lost just 3 games out of 30 to date this season.

Indeed, the Suffolk ladies could do little to stem the tide on the day, with Lady of the Match Chrissy Stubbings (Smock – 16.90 ave) who won 3-2, the only player to manage to win a leg as the rest of the team succumbed to 3-0 defeats.

Suffolk’s beaten players were Mandy Reeves (Stowmarket -18.87 ave), Rossy Scriven (Smock – 18.26 ave), Jo Locke (Smock – 16.36 ave), Sarah Ceska (Smock – 20.86 ave) and Nicky Doidge (Bury – 15.85 ave).

As the B team a day before them, Suffolk Men’s A side faced a four game deficit in the overall game – and despite a good win for Rob Morling (Clapgate Lane – 26.10 ave), the writing was on the wall as the next three games all ended in 4-3 defeats.

Andrew Noy (Leiston – 24.97 ave & 180), Dave Ballard-Flatt (Leiston – 29.04 ave) and Jason Elvin (Walsham – 25.13 ave) were the unlucky Suffolk players, but the visitors did pull one back when Rob Warman (Saxmundham – 26.96 ave & 180) won 4-1.

There was to be no stopping of Surrey though, as defeats for the Smock quartet of Mark Walker (24.01 ave), Daren Wood (23.57 ave), Wayne Hammond (23.56 ave & 2 x 180s) and Phil Reeve (23.37 ave) secured the home side victory in the Men’s B match and also gave them an unassailable 21-12 lead overall.

Nick Bloom (Walsham – 28.63 ave & 180) gave a Man of the Match performance to claw one back for Suffolk, but Gary Butcher (Haverhill – 21.99 ave) and Ian Randles (Sudbury – 26.92 ave) lost in the final two games as Surrey Men’s B ran out 9-3 winners, and sealed a 23-13 overall victory for the home side.

Suffolk are next in action on the weekend of March 4th and 5th when Hertfordshire are the visitors to Kesgrave Social Club.
